In short
- Conn has no account, no analytics, no tracking and no ads.
- We don't collect any data from the app. Nothing you do in Conn is sent to us.
- Conn connects only to the machines you add, your local network to find them, and your own iCloud.
- Your passwords and keys stay on your device.
Conn is an app for iPhone, iPad and Mac that opens a terminal, a screen and files on machines you choose. It is made by Maritime Master Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 15339200). In this policy "we" means Maritime Master Limited.
What Conn collects
Nothing. Conn has no server of its own, and it doesn't send us, or anyone working for us, any information about you, your device, your machines or how you use the app. It contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code, and it doesn't track you across other companies' apps or websites. We share no data with any third party, because we have none to share.
Apple's privacy label for Conn on the App Store reads Data Not Collected.
What stays on your device
Conn keeps what it needs to work on your device:
- Your hosts and settings: the names, addresses, ports and user names of the machines you add, your groups, snippets and app settings.
- Passwords, private keys and known host keys are kept in your device's Keychain, set to this device only. They are never synced, and never restored onto another device from a backup. Saved SSH passwords, a Mac's password and a Raspberry Pi's account password ask for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode each time they're used. A key made in the Secure Enclave can never leave the device it was made on.
- Command history stays on your device. Conn asks the system to leave it out of your device's backups. A backup made before a version that did this may still hold it.
- Files you open or download from your machines are kept on your device: previews and quick edits in a cache that is cleared when you close them, and downloads until you delete them. Downloads are kept in Conn's own Downloads folder on the device.
- What a terminal or a screen shows is held in memory only, and isn't saved unless you save it yourself.
To remove it, delete a host in Conn, which also removes its saved passwords, and forget a key in Keys. Deleting Conn removes the rest of what it keeps on the device. The system's Keychain can keep items after an app is deleted, so delete hosts and keys in Conn first if you want everything gone.
What syncs, if you turn iCloud on
iCloud sync is off until you turn it on. With it on, your hosts sync between your own devices through your private iCloud database, using Apple's CloudKit: their names, addresses, ports, user names, notes, tags, icons, Wake-on-LAN hardware addresses, jump hosts, saved port forwards and settings, when each was last connected, and their sign in records (a label, a user name, the kind of sign in, whether Face ID or Touch ID is needed, and a Keychain item ID, never the password or key). So do your groups and snippets, with their commands.
Passwords, keys, known host keys and command history never sync. We can't see your private iCloud database; Apple holds it under its own privacy policy. You can turn sync off at any time in Conn's Settings. What was already synced stays in your iCloud: delete hosts in Conn while sync is on to remove them there too.
When Conn first opens, its welcome checks whether your iCloud account is available for sync and whether Conn has synced with it before. That check reads none of your data and sends none of it.
Other Apple features you can use
These run through Apple's own services, between your own devices or on your device, and never reach us:
- Handoff passes what you're looking at (a host's name, the user name it signed in as, a folder or a session's name, never a password or a key) to your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Shortcuts, Siri and Spotlight can show host and snippet names you use in actions. Shortcuts may sync them through your iCloud. With app lock on, Siri and Spotlight suggest no host by name.
- Web pages from a port forward open in Safari's view inside Conn on iPhone and iPad, which keeps that page's website data on your device under Safari's own rules.
- Notifications on a Mac can show a session's name and its host's name. With app lock on, they name neither.
- Local Network: Conn looks for machines on your local network so it can offer them. This happens on your device and your network only.
The machines you connect to
Conn connects directly to machines you choose, over SSH, VNC and SFTP. What you type, the files you move and what you see travel between your device and those machines, not through us. Those machines are yours, or ones you're allowed to use, and whoever runs them is responsible for what they do with that data.
Conn has no AI built in and sends nothing to any AI service. If you start an AI tool on one of your machines, it runs there, under your account and that tool's own terms.
Crash reports
If you choose to share analytics with app developers in your device's settings, Apple may send us crash reports for Conn. They're made by Apple, not by Conn, and are shared only with your permission. We use them only to find and fix faults. You can turn this off at any time in your device's Privacy settings. If you test a beta through TestFlight, Apple also shares with us the feedback, screenshots and crash reports you choose to send.
This website
This website sets no cookies and uses no analytics, tracking pixels, advertising, embedded videos or fonts from other companies. Every file on it comes from the same place as the page.
Like any website, the company that hosts it receives the standard details your browser sends when it asks for a page (your IP address, the page, the time and your browser's description), and may keep them in its logs for a short time to run and protect the service. We don't use them to identify you, and we don't combine them with anything else.
When you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and we use them only to answer you. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in answering your message. We keep support emails for up to 24 months after the conversation ends, then delete them, unless the law requires us to keep them longer. Our email is hosted by an email provider, which may store it outside the UK under safeguards that UK law accepts.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have rights over personal data we hold about you, including to ask for a copy, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object. Because Conn sends us nothing, the only personal data we're likely to hold about you is an email you sent us. To use your rights, email admin@bottletopstudios.co.uk.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first at the address above. We'll acknowledge your complaint within 30 days and tell you what we're doing about it. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Conn is a tool for running your own machines and isn't made for children. It collects no data from anyone, of any age.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top and publish the new version at this address. If Conn ever starts to collect data, we'll say so here before it does, and in the App Store listing.
